About the Project

Primal is an ambitious feature film bringing prehistoric creatures to life with cutting-edge CG. Mooncake Studio handled the creature production pipeline — high-resolution modeling, look development, texture/shading, blendshapes, and character FX including Yeti fur grooming, all rendered through Arnold.

From massive beasts to delicate feathered creatures, every asset demanded anatomical accuracy paired with cinematic appeal. Full CFX and grooming setups delivered production-ready characters built to perform under the most demanding camera angles.

Technical Challenges

Anatomical Accuracy

Prehistoric creatures built from paleontological reference — musculature, skin folds and skeletal structure all driven by real anatomical data for maximum believability.

Hyper-Detailed Grooming

Tiger fur with individual guard hairs, undercoat layers and realistic color variation — millions of curves groomed to move naturally under any lighting condition.

Dynamic CFX

Full character FX simulations for skin sliding, muscle jiggle and fur dynamics — every movement has weight and physicality that grounds the creatures in reality.

Cinematic Rendering

Arnold renders with complex multi-bounce lighting, SSS skin shading and environment interaction — built to hold up under the most demanding camera angles.
